In Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, a team of scientists discover orihalcum amulets and a stone slab covered in Etrurian runes on a floating atoll off the eastern coast of the Philippines. As they investigate, they encounter Gamera, a giant turtle, and Gyaos, bird-like creatures that attack humans. The government captures two of the Gyaos but the last one escapes to the harbor where it is killed by Gamera. Asagi, the daughter of one of the scientists, forms a spiritual bond with Gamera after touching one of the amulets. The team discovers that the Gyaos are genetically engineered and reproduce asexually, and that Gamera was created to combat them. As Gyaos attacks Tokyo, Gamera emerges to stop the creature in a massive air battle, with Asagi using her spiritual energy to revive Gamera and defeat Gyaos. Asagi states that Gamera will return if any future threats arise.

In Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, the iconic monster returns after a long hiatus with upgraded effects and a serious tone. As a guardian deity, Gamera battles his old foe Gyaos in Fukuoka and an epic aerial fight over Tokyo.

Following a long absence from the big screen, Gamera made a triumphant return to form in time for his 30th anniversary, with upgraded special effects and a more serious tone. Now a guardian deity, Gamera tussles with a new incarnation of his old foe - the flying monster Gyaos - first in Fukuoka, and then in a spectacular aerial battle over Tokyo.
